The Famous Cribstone Bridge
To find Morse's Cribstone Grill, we were told to drive over the cribstone bridge and the restaurant would be immediately on the left. Huh?? A WHAT bridge? Not wanting to appear too ignorant before our advisor, we took out our smart phones along the way to google the term, as we had no idea what a cribstone bridge was. Well, here it is!
Built of massive slabs of granite from local quarries, finished in 1928, it is the only one of its kind in the world. Connecting Bailey Island and Orr's Island, it has survived extreme tidal flows, storms and floods common to Maine. Using gravity alone for support, the staggered and engineered placed slabs allow the water to flux and recede without restriction.
